Julianne Hazeltine, 63, Kendrick
May 25, 2010
Julianne (Julie) Hazeltine, 63, of Kendrick, went home to the
Lord Thursday, May 20, 2010, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center
in Lewiston. She was surrounded by her loved ones at the time of her
death.
Julie was born Aug. 10, 1946, in Wichita, Kan., and was adopted
by James and Jewel McManus of San Francisco. After the loss of
Jewel, James met and married Angela Grange Cavagnaro-Jordon. Both of
them had a daughter of their own and they had three more children
together. The family was raised in San Mateo, Calif., around many
aunts, uncles and extended family. Julie graduated from high school
in 1964 and attended junior college.
In 1966, she joined the VISTA volunteer program and was sent to
Lapwai to work with the Nez Perce Tribe. After a year with the VISTA
program, she returned home for a couple of months before returning
to Idaho, where she had fallen in love with the area and the people.
She then was hired by Community Action Partnership of Lewiston.
While working there she also began working part time at the Lewiston
Veterinary Clinic and in 1968 she was hired full time.
While working at the clinic she met Dareld D. Hazeltine, when he
brought in some cattle to be worked on. They were married June 9,
1971, and they lived in Asotin. In 1973, they were blessed with son
Wyatt Todd. Then, in 1974, they moved to Kendrick to help with the
family farm and run cattle. In 1976, they were surprised with
daughter Jennifer.
While her children were growing up, she held part-time jobs
around Kendrick. When her kids got older, she began to work at the
Orchards Nursing Home and then she got on at the Latah County Jail
as a cook. She retired from the jail in 2009, after 20 years of
cooking for inmates. Julie was known by the officers as the "mean
cook" and made the best chocolate chip cookies.
Julie enjoyed spending time with her family and spoiling her two
grandchildren, going out RVing, reading, watching TV, and she was an
avid professional bull riders fan.
She was involved with raising and showing miniature horses and
Shetland ponies with her daughter and son-in-law. She was a past 4-H
leader, Juliaetta-Kendrick Junior Miss committee member, and a
founder of the Donna Frary Memorial Scholarship program. She also
spent many years parking campers at the Latah County Fair.
Julie is survived by her husband, Dareld Hazeltine of Kendrick;
son Wyatt Todd Hazeltine and partner Crystal Stover of Clarkston;
daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Tom Perrigo of Kendrick;
grandchildren James Dean and Wyatt Alexander Hazeltine, both of
Clarkston; mother-in-law Elma Hazeltine and sister-in-law Laurine
Hazeltine, both of Kendrick; sisters Victoria Reno, Angelea McManus,
and Elizabeth Burnett and husband Steve, all of California; a
brother, Edward McManus and wife Shannon of Massachusetts; along
with several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Julie was preceded in death by her mothers, Jewel and Angela
McManus; father James McManus; and several aunts, uncles and
grandparents.
A celebration of life will be conducted at a later date. She will
be buried at Bethany Memorial Cemetery outside of Kendrick.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the
Donna Frary Memorial of the Juliaetta-Kendrick Junior Miss program
or the Juliaetta-Kendrick Ambulance Fund. Malcom's Brower-Wann
Funeral Home in Lewiston is in charge of the arrangements.
Condolences may be sent at
